Following Trump insult, basketball legend Michael Jordan supports Lakers icon LeBron James

Cleveland Cavaliers star Le Bron James speaks as Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton listens during a campaign stop at Cleveland Public Hall in Cleveland Sunday Nov. 6 2016

According to NBC News, Jordan released a statement through a spokesperson that said, "I support LJ. [LeBron James]. He's doing an wonderful job for his community".

Trump has also repeatedly criticized Lemon, prompting CNN to issue a statement past year accusing the president of using social media to bully others.

That interview is what drew Trump's ire and prompted the Friday night tweet insulting LeBron's intelligence.

LeBron James and Michael Jordan are arguably the two best professional basketball players ever.

While NBA athletes, entertainers and politicians alike fired off a flurry of responses directed at the president, James' first tweet following Trump's diss made no mention of the former reality TV star turned politician.

CNN host Don Lemon defended James and alluded to Be Best while taking a jab at the president Saturday.

Though Grisham refused to comment on the report directly, she said the first lady watches "any channel she wants".

Trump has taken a harsh stance on the ongoing debate over players in the National Football League (NFL) who refuse to stand for the national anthem in protest against racial injustice and police brutality.

The statement from Stephanie Grisham said, "It looks like LeBron James is working to do good things on behalf of our next generation".

A number of athletes jumped in to defend James.

"What I've noticed over the past few months, [is] he's kinda used sports to kinda divide us, and that's something that I can't relate to", James told Lemon. But James has been outspoken about the president's policies, once calling him a "bum" for disinviting the Golden State Warriors to the White House. "I was like, wow, this is all because of sports".

In choosing her official first lady platform, Trump picked something that involved teaching kindness on social media, something her husband clearly does not practice, even though she continues to face widespread criticism for that decision amid cries of hypocrisy. James said the school prioritizes a holistic experience for students that include sports, which he described as critical for healthy communities.

Trump's Twitter post came hours before he was due to hold an election rally in Ohio, James's home state, ahead of a special congressional election on Tuesday - the last major partisan electoral test before the November midterms.

He also argued that Mr Trump's actions had encouraged racists, saying: "I think [racism's] always been there".
