Active situation: Shooting leaves four dead in F

Police say four people are dead, including two police officers, following a shooting Friday morning in Fredericton.

Police said there are multiple fatalities and have urged local residents to stay in their homes and lock their doors.

The incident in Fredericton comes a little over a week after two people were killed and 15 injured when a man went on a shooting spree in Toronto, Canada's biggest city.

"Please appreciate this is a hard time for their families and our colleagues", the force tweeted, adding that more information would be released when they're able.

Police later tweeted that one suspect was in custody.

"Police continue to on scene of a shooting on Brookside Drive".

She also reported that people were being escorted out of the area by police.

David MacCoubrey said he awoke in his Brookside Drive apartment at 7:07 the sound of gunshots "10 metres from my bed".

CNN network partner CTV said its reporter there said "police appeared to be focused on one particular residence" and that he heard four shots during a five-minute stretch.

Several police, firefighters and paramedics are at the scene. They said the investigation is ongoing and the suspect is being treated for serious injuries.

Area resident Robert DiDiodato told the CBC that he heard sounds like a "firecracker" at around 7am.

"Doors are locked and everybody's inside", he said.

Fredericton is located about 50 miles northeast of the USA border with Maine.
