All Bot Team OpenAI Decimates Former Pros in Dota 2 Tournament

Watch OpenAI's Dota 2 bots square off against five top players live on Twitch today

The OpenAI Five also played roughly 180 years worth of gameplay every day through reinforcement learning, which allowed the bots to develop advanced skills for the game.

In order to make the game manageable for AI bots, the game was tweaked a bit.

OpenAI Five hammered its human opponents in the first two rounds, but for the last game the audience picked a team of five heroes while the AI's were pre-selected. "This reaction time is much closer to human level, though we haven't seen evidence of changes in gameplay as OpenAI Five's strength comes more from teamwork and coordination than reflexes".

After the game 1 draft, OpenAI Five predicted a 95% win probability, even though the matchup seemed about even to the human observers.

Next, OpenAI's developers plan to take the bots to Valve's official worldwide tournament, where they'll compete against the best Dota 2 players in the world.

In the Benchmark match itself, a new OpenAI Five capability was revealed - drafting, something that is considered an extremely challenging part of Dota, since heroes interact with each other in complex ways.

Team Human did squeeze out a win in the third match, but not without some strings attached. The team of former professional players and commentators was said to have ranked in the 99.95th percentile in the world. OpenAI admitted however, that 1v1 matches have many less variables involved, making it easier for an AI to learn and master.

It was a best-out-of-three event, so the AI had already won when round three came along.

OpenAI's initiatives with Dota 2 began in March a year ago. OpenAI had the capacity to predict its chance of winning during each stage of the game, as well as during character selection.

That could be quite an ask as some professional players have an instinct for Dota 2 that is arguably hard to teach - AI systems are excellent at learning straightforward things or specific tasks but asking them to think generally and instinctively is another level. The best gamers in the world are machines.
