Whey Powder Supplier Named by FDA in Salmonella Recalls

Ritz crackers recalled due to possible Salmonella contamination

More than 200 people in 44 different states have become infected with Salmonella, and the CDC is blaming backyard poultry for the outbreaks. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. The earliest case of the illness started on November 20, 2017, and the most recently recorded with the CDC was reported on June 29, 2018.

The company said it has not received any complaints or reports of its customers contracting Salmonella but chose to recall products voluntarily.

Laboratory findings link these outbreaks to contact with live poultry, like chicks and ducklings, according to the CDC. This contact was traced back to chicks and ducklings obtained from several sources including feed supply stores, websites, hatcheries and relatives.

The investigation is still ongoing, and the CDC has said that they will provide updates as they get more information.

At this time, no deaths linked to these cases have been reported.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Salmonella causes about 1.2 million illnesses every year, and food is usually the cause.

Twenty-six percent of the illnesses are in kids younger than five-years old. Do not allow live poultry inside the house or around food. Product recalls, in particular, can be immensely complicated as a communications team must work internally with its legal department, marketing team, C-suite, product engineers and sales department, and externally with retailers, consumers, health officials, the media and social media users.

-Always wash hands thoroughly with soap and water right after touching live poultry or anything in their environment. It typically lasts four to seven days, and most people recover without an antibiotic. If you would like to discuss another topic, look for a relevant article. To avoid tracking the bacteria elsewhere, use a separate pair of shoes for taking care of the birds, and don't wear them inside of your home.
