This year's Tony Awards were about more than the winners

The Band's Visit, the Broadway musical based on an Israeli film, swept the Tony Awards on Sunday night, taking home 10 prizes - including best musical - at the ceremony in NY.

While introducing a performance by Bruce Springsteen, for instance, presenter Robert De Niro said "f**k Trump" twice sending CBS censors scrambling to bleep his off-colour remarks.

Cohosted by Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban and presented by the American Theater Wing and the Broadway League, the Tonys were televised on CBS from Radio City Music Hall in NY.

"For so many years of my life I pretended I was not a Middle Eastern person", he said, addressing his parents in the audience.

He also praised "a cast of actors who never believed they would be able to portray their own races". She got Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical for her work in Carousel. Laurie Metcalf won her second Tony, playing a younger version of Jackson's imperious character in Three Tall Women.

"The Band's Visit" also won awards for Best Book (by Itamar Moses), Best Direction of a Musical, Best Original Score (by David Yazbek), Best Lighting Design, Best Orchestration and Best Sound Design. Hosts Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban were just what this kind of evening needs: They are theater people (well, they are now, having starred respectively in Waitress and The Great Comet).

Other winners included Carousel (best choreography and best featured actress in a musical - Lindsay Mendez). The musical adaptation of the legendary and beloved 2004 film was nominated for a total of 12 Tony Awards, tying SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical for the most of the season.

Actor Andrew Garfield took home the first award of the night at the 2018 Tony Awards on Sunday, and delivered an acceptance speech that addressed the controversial Supreme Court decision that sided with a baker who for religious reasons refused to create a wedding cake for a gay couple.

The ceremony producers went well out of their way to include quite a bit of Bruce Springsteen, whose Broadway show received a special award - seemingly for bringing new people into Broadway theaters.
