Rebel Wilson has Australian defamation payout slashed

Rebel Wilson's $4.5million defamation payout has been slashed to just $600,000 on appeal

In June previous year a six-person jury found in favour of Wilson's claim against the publisher of Woman's Day and the Australian Women's Weekly.

"In particular, this court has rejected the finding that Rebel Wilson lost the opportunity to earn AU$15m by being cast in lead or co-lead roles in three Hollywood feature films during the period from mid-2015 to the end of 2016", Justice Pamela Tate said.

The Sydney-born Pitch Perfect star was awarded damages against Bauer Media in September, after the group published articles claiming she lied about her age and background to further her career.

The Court of Appeal has since ruled that there was no basis for Wilson to receive financial damages for the potential loss of roles.

The Victorian Court of Appeal agreed, setting aside the decision to award her just over Aus$3.9 million for economic losses.

Remember Rebel Wilson's mega defamation case against Bauer Media, where she was awarded a record-breaking $4.5 million in damages?

It also reduced Wilson's non-economic losses by 50,000 Australian dollars to 600,000 Australian dollars.

Rebel wasn't at the hearing, but tweeted her followers to say that she had already won the case and that it was only the amount of damages that had been challenged.

A court had ordered Bauer to pay her A$4.5m (£2.7m; $3.6m) - a record for an Australian defamation case.

A summary of the Court of Appeal's judgement said: "For a considerable number of reasons, the critical inferences drawn by the judge could not be upheld". And that while it's not about the money, she'd like to cop as much as possible so she can donate it all to charity and the Aussie film industry.

Speaking on behalf of Bauer Media, General Counsel, Adrian Goss, said in a statement: "It was important for us to revisit the award of damages".

Her lawyers had been seeking more than $7 million claiming Wilson had missed out on major Hollywood film roles.
