The 2026 World Cup is to be the first to feature 48 teams, compared to the 32 that are to compete in Russian Federation and Qatar.

The leaders of Mexico and Canada gleefully cheered winning the right to host the 2026 World Cup jointly with the United States on Wednesday, emphasizing unity at a time when U.S. President Donald Trump has frayed relations with the two neighbors during his 18 months in office.

The joint North American bid received 134 of the 203 votes, while Morocco polled 65 in the ballot at a FIFA Congress held in Moscow on the eve of the 2018 World Cup.

It will come 32 years after the USA first hosted the 1994 World Cup, an event which kicked off the popularity of the sport in America.

"The issue about who will get automatic bids to the '26 World Cup, if that's the question, that is not Concacaf's decision that's FIFA's decision and that will be made in the passage of time", Cordeiro said.

A Federation Internationale de Football Association inspection commission in April gave it a considerably higher score in an evaluation report than Morocco, noting the extensive infrastructure already in place in the three countries, compared to Morocco, which would have had to construct or renovate all its stadiums and build large amounts of accommodation and transport.

Large votes are often swayed by small concessions promised to the right number of smaller nations or by regional biases.

In an agreement announced when the bid launched a year ago, the United States will stage 60 of the 80 matches, including all from the quarterfinals on, while Mexico and Canada will get 10 apiece.

The U.S. has submitted 17 cities to host matches, but that list will be narrowed down to 10 by 2021.

Fifa's president, Gianni Infantino, looked opportunistically quick to immediately put himself forward for re-election next year, and he was followed by United States president Donald Trump with a self-congratulatory tweet.

Before the vote, some had suggested that a "Trump effect" was harming the United States' chances, saying the president's quarrels internationally were putting off some countries.

North American soccer fans have something to look forward to beyond Thursday's kickoff of the World Cup in Russian Federation. "Why should we be supporting these countries when they don't support us (including at the United Nations)?"

With only three teams in each group and each team guaranteed only two games, there is a greater opportunity for teams to collude with each other in the final group-stage matches to secure passage to the knockout round.

A total of 23 finalists between the three countries have been selected as possible locations for World Cup games. In particular, Trump has been engaged in a high-profile dispute with Canadian President Justin Trudeau over steel and aluminum tariffs, which led to a contentious G7 summit last week.

The United States was defeated in the final round of voting to determine the 2022 World Cup host. Twenty-three cities, including Washington and Baltimore, are in the running to become the 16 match venues.
