Details and pricing of the Vivo NEX surface ahead of launch

Vivo NEX and its elevating camera are now official

They call it Ultra FullView Display and uses a 6.59-inch Super AMOLED panel with FHD+ (2316 x 1080px) resolution and a unique 19.3:9 ratio. The Vivo NEX smartphones come in Diamond Black and Red colors. Both the devices have a 12MP rear camera with dual-tone LED flash (Sony IMX363 sensor and 4-axis OIS) f/1.8 aperture. This technology hides the fingerprint sensor underneath the display while still delivering fingerprint access on the front of the phone.

The device features a third-generation in-display fingerprint scanning technology, which according to the company increases the screen unlock time by 10 percent and increases the overall experience of phone unlocking. The fingerprint scanner is located in the centre of the display and shows a small logo whenever someone wants to access their phone. There's a secondary 5-megapixel camera as well on-board.

Vivo has joined the ranks of phone makers that offer their own virtual assistant, with Jovi. The top-end model with 8GB RAM is priced at 4,998 Yuan, which converts to Rs 52,669, while the mid-range device costs 4,498 Yuan (about Rs 47,400). In any case, it should be an improvement over the company's previous devices which sported in-display fingerprint scanners. We hope it will be launching in other places, but right now it's only confirmed as a device for those in China where the price has yet to be revealed. For one, the 8MP f/2.0 front camera is placed onto an elevating mechanism that pops up when needed; sounds reverbates through the screen itself thanks to Vivo's so-called Screen SoundCasting Technology, which is most probably utilizing a piezoelectric technology at its core, similarly to what Xiaomi did with the first Mi Mix but later backtracked.

TechRadar is now in China at the launch of the new Vivo phone, so we'll be testing out the phone as soon as possible to give you our verdict on this next-generation device. Vivo says it used AI techniques to improve scene recognition, HDR, and photo composition, though this may be just another example of companies abusing the term "AI".

Vivo needs a big win with the Nex handsets, in the face of declining shipments and tough competition.

The Vivo NEX is powered by 4,000mAh battery that is enabled with support for 22.5W fast charging through USB-C. That includes having a dedicated Jovi button.

The Nex A features the Snapdragon 710 - and comes with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The secret is the hidden front-facing camera.

The device is available for pre-orders from tomorrow (13 June) and will be available in stores from June 23 in China. Both NEX A and NEX S also feature a 3.5mm audio jack and, of course, AI capabilities.
