'Whitney' Trailer: Whitney Houston Documentary Aims To Hit All The Notes

Whitney Houston Cannes Film Festival Cannes Cannes 2018

Whitney debuted at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival in a midnight screening on Wednesday and the first official US trailer just hit the web.

Snippets of interviews with Houston's former husband, Bobby Brown, as well as record industry honchos Clive Davis and L.A. Reid also pop up in the trailer, indicating how much access Macdonald was given.

In the first teaser trailer released in April Houston's mother, Cissy Houston, says, "You have three places to sing from: heart, mind, guts".

Houston's assistant and close friend Robyn Crawford appears to be a huge topic in the documentary, as the film explores the nature of their relationship and even suggest Bobby Brown wasn't too keen on it.

From director Kevin Macdonald ("Marley"), "Whitney", was executive produced by the Houston family and does not shy from the tragedy of the singer's drug abuse, emotional woe and the dizzying highs of her journey.

"He wanted to be on the stage. He wanted to be in the forefront, and eventually she stepped down to lift him up".

The film will also highlight Houston's relationship with her mother who was admittedly tough on her superstar daughter.

The first official trailer for Whitney has arrived and it's packed with information about the late, great, icon, Whitney Houston. "That girls is signing off-key on the record". But then I did two things.

"There were times when I'd look up to God and I'd go, 'Why is this happening to me?" she recalls in vintage footage. "She's someone who has had such a big impact on culture but is not taken seriously".

The film, which will make its theatrical debut on July 6, incorporates features like never-before-seen archival footage and rare performances to wrap viewers into Houston's life.
