Under an order of the Supreme Court, polling took place in around 66% of the seats. In the polling booths of North 24 Parganas, South 24 Paragana and West Midnapore, security personnel maintained strict vigil on the re-polling process and kept these areas nearly violence-free.

Barring few stray incidents of violence in some booths, the re-polling in 572 polling booths in West Bengal panchayat elections was largely peaceful on Wednesday.

He said the administration was in the process of ensuring tight security for Wednesday's re-polling between 7am and 5pm.

This happened as a result of people's agitation when the re-polling started late in booth number 36/37.

The single-phase rural polls in the state on Monday saw large scale violence and clashes between opposing political outfits throughout the day even as more than 60,000 armed personnel and 80,000 civic volunteers were deployed to guard close to 58,000 polling booths. They will have to pay compensation if the loss of life and property exceeded the figures of the 2013 panchayat elections. In the 2013 panchayat elections, BJP received a meagre three per cent votes after fielding only 9,000 candidates.
