Romania was one of four countries that recently blocked a European Union statement criticizing the US for moving its embassy from Tel Aviv to contested Jerusalem on Monday.

Canada and its other major allies do not support the embassy move.

In December, for example, as the U.N. General Assembly weighed a resolution urging the Trump administration to withdraw its recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital, Haley said the US would "be taking names".

President Trump made history late previous year when he officially recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel; sparking outrage from the United Nations and other countries throughout the Middle East.

"Rather, the violence comes from those who reject the existence of the state of Israel in any location", Haley told the council.

UK's ambassador to the UN, Karen Pierce, called the violence, which produced the worst single-day death toll since the Israeli-Hamas war in 2014, "shocking and appalling" and wondered if extensive use of live fire by the Israeli Army was "justified".

In a statement which has been quoted by BBC, Trudeau said Canada is "gravely concerned by the violence in the Gaza Strip that has led to a tragic loss of life and injured countless people". "All parties to the conflict have a responsibility to ensure civilians are protected".
