Mikel Arteta may replace Arsene Wenger

Emery yet to receive Arsenal offer

Since then, Arteta has been working as an assistant coach at Manchester City, but Pep Guardiola has already said that he will not prevent Arteta from leaving if he is offered another job.

Arsene Wenger took charge of his last game at Huddersfield on Sunday as the curtain came down on a 22-year spell at the helm.

It is understood the new manager will be able to bring in his own backroom staff.

Massimiliano Allegri of Juventus and former Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti both continue to also be linked with the vacancy.

So prospective manager Arteta is eager for his compatriot to take up a coaching role with the club, joining the likes of Jens Lehmann and Per Mertesacker as ex-players who have returned to Arsenal behind the scenes.

Vieira is also a firm favourite with Gunners' fans, having helped drive Wenger's Invincibles team through their unbeaten league season of 2003/2004.

'With Vieira - and this is only my opinion - yes. Not just because he's my friend.

"It will be very hard for me [without Arsenal]", Wenger said.

Carzorla, who has is out of contract in the summer, hasn't kicked a ball in anger since a 3-2 win over Swansea City in October 2016 due to injury but it appears Arteta is keen on keeping his former teammate at Arsenal.

Although CEO Ivan Gazidis wants to complete a thorough process in the search for Arsene Wenger's successor, no candidate ticks the boxes like the 36-year-old does.

"So that's why I say - yes, Patrick Vieira is ready to manage Arsenal".
