'Marvel's Agents of SHIELD' Renewed for Shortened Season 6 on ABC

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 5

"I feel the season we just had was creatively the strongest yet", she told attendees. "S.H.I.E.L.D." has been perpetually low-rated in recent years, though Deadline reports that it performs very well on DVR viewings, and is also quite popular overseas.

Word is that the sixth season renewal came down to the wire.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs on Friday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC. Season 6 will now consist of 13 episodes, down from its usual 22-episode order, which doesn't bode well for the comic book series. The show was meant to be an offshoot of the big screen MCU, tying into events of the films, but that close connectivity proved to be almost impossible to do on a larger scale since films take two years to make and television is written, shot, produced, and aired in a matter of weeks.

The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. have (some) more missions ahead of them.

The show is the only Marvel property to survive more than two seasons on basic cable.

The Season 5 finale will air Friday, May 18 at 9/8c on ABC.

Instead, the shortened season will serve as a follow up to Avengers 4, positioning the show to bring to live the street-level aftermath of those surely-collosal events. Though it can be a bummer for fans, it's not much of a surprise to see the series get shuffled around the schedule to a less competitive period. S.H.I.E.L.D. was among the shows considered on the bubble until Monday's renewal announcement confirmed that Coulson (Clark Gregg) and company would, indeed, be back for another season - much to the delight of anxious fans.
