Keeper Neuer in Germany's preliminary World Cup squad

GETTYGermany World Cup squad- the 27 men in line to go to Russia

Joachim Loew has extended his contract as Germany head coach until 2022, the German FA (DFB) announced on Tuesday.

World Cup-winning goalscorer Mario Gotze has been left out of Germany's squad for June's tournament in Russian Federation.

Loew will need to present his final squad selection to Federation Internationale de Football Association by June 4.

"I know that those players [who missed out] are just very disappointed because they worked hard for it. Sandro has shown his class when with the team".

"Neuer is back in full training and we want to see and judge him in the training camp", said Low, who has named Barcelona's Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Bayer Leverkusen's Bernd Leno and Kevin Trapp of Paris Saint-Germain as his other goalkeepers.

However, there was no place in the squad for Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi, who was part of the World Cup-winning squad in 2014 and has 20 worldwide caps.

However, Loew pulled a surprise by handing a first call-up to Freiburg striker Nils Petersen, 29, the top-scoring German in the Bundesliga this season with 15 goals. "The decision is never against a particular player, but for the overall success of the team". He also increased his reputation as the ideal team player, so much so that he earned high praise from the coach and former German global, Horst Hrubesch.

Oliver Bierhoff, the national team general manager, is also extending his deal, to 2024, along with assistant Marcus Sorg.

Reus, who missed half of this season through injury, was ruled out of the 2014 World Cup after being injured in Germany's last warm-up match.

The defending champions have been drawn in Group F alongside Mexico, Sweden and South Korea, and will begin their World Cup preparations with a friendly against Austria on 2 June, before facing Saudi Arabia on 8 June. "But this season he didn't play at his highest level".
