But Samore added that Russian Federation, a leading powerbroker in Syria and key Assad ally, wants to keep things "under control" and avoid "a big war between Israel and Iran" on Syrian territory.

Israel said the strikes early Thursday were retaliation for an Iranian rocket barrage on its positions in the Golan Heights and has called on the U.N. Security Council and secretary-general to immediately condemn Iran's attack.

Iran appeared determined not to be drawn into a wider regional conflict with Israel during the sensitive negotiations.

The Golan flare-up with Israel "is just further demonstration that the Iranian regime can not be trusted and another good reminder that the president made the right decision to get out of the Iran deal", White House press secretary Sarah Sanders told Fox News.

"[There are] a variety of groups that could possibly strike Israel on its behalf, such as one of the many new "Syrian Hezbollah" groups integrated into the registers of the Syrian armed forces, or one of the Iraqi groups that emerged during the war, like Harakat al-Nujaba and its 'Golan Liberation Brigade'".

Iran has vowed to retaliate for repeated Israeli airstrikes targeting its forces in Syria.

A successful terrorist attack of this kind would inevitably alter the picture, pushing Israel and Iran to the brink of a full-scale war. The occupied Golan, which Israel captured from Syria in a 1967 war, was quiet on Wednesday.

On Twitter, Lieberman said he had spoken to his United States counterpart James Mattis and "updated him on regional developments".

Another possible group, Tamimi said, was a Palestinian organization linked to Hezbollah and the IRGC, such as the "Force of Return", which is now fighting for the regime of Bashar Assad in the Yarmouk camp outside Damascus. Israel has warned that it will not allow Iran to establish a permanent military presence in Syria. "I hope that we ended this chapter and that everyone understood". Worldwide agencies responsible for inspecting compliance have said that Iran was in full cooperation with the agreement's terms. Now they are directly fighting one another, and it's happening on Syrian territories.

Merkel alluded to the two countries' support for the Iran nuclear deal.

A prominent Iranian cleric on Friday threatened two Israeli cities with destruction if the Jewish state "acts foolishly" and attacks its interests again, while thousands of protesters demonstrated against President Donald Trump's withdrawal from the Iranian nuclear deal with world powers.

Although slogans of "Death to America" were few, many Iranians are sincerely angry over the USA decision to withdraw from the deal and are siding with hard-liners who long have warned to be suspicious of the West.

In Tehran, senior cleric Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami said the Western pressure will backfire, threatening that Israel will pay the price.

"The holy system of Islamic Republic will step up its missile capabilities day by day so that Israel, this occupying regime, will become sleepless and the nightmare will constantly haunt it that if it does anything foolish, we will raze Tel Aviv and Haifa to the ground", the hard-line cleric said during Friday sermons. The worshippers chanted: "Death to America", and "Death to Israel".

Assad spoke in an interview with the Greek Kathimerini newspaper published Thursday, before Israel carried out airstrikes in Syria in response to what it said was a cross-border rocket attack by Iranian forces.

In the latest victory for Assad, Syrian police prepared Friday to take control of three suburbs of the capital Damascus previously controlled by the rebels.

Conricus said Israel forewarned Russian Federation of its strikes on Thursday, which Syrian state media first reported hit Baath City in Quneitra, near the border.

In all, at least 23 people were killed in the strikes, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitoring group.

El Deeb reported from Beirut.
