The new tool was discovered during an APK teardown, and shows the user the time spent on the app, though there aren't enough details to know the scope of the data provided.

Now, Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom has taken to Twitter to confirm that the Usage Insights feature is indeed real and that it will be coming to all users at some point in the future.

With a feature that alerts users who spend too long on the app, Instagram risks seeing a decline in usage and ad interaction. He also said that "it's the responsibility of all companies to be honest about this".

The hidden code also reveals other upcoming features on Instagram including an Emoji Bar that lets you add most popular emoji with a single tap, and an @ button to help you tag others easily.

It is not immediately clear whether Instagram will show you the total time you have spent on the application till now or just break it down by shorter time frame like during the day, week or month. For example, if you find out how many hours of your life you've spent on Instagram, you might be more shocked and thus unwilling to use it further, rather than a daily report that could help you curb the habit. It also confirmed that YouTube will soon include things like usage stats and notification reductions to make it easier for you to stay away from the smartphone.
