Browns selected for "Hard Knocks"

Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield runs a drill during rookie minicamp at the NFL football team's training camp facility in Berea Ohio. A person familiar with the decision says the Browns will appear on HBO's

Coming off a historic, dismal 0-16 season, the Browns have been chosen to appear on HBO's popular "Hard Knocks" series, which gives National Football League fans a behind-the-scenes look at training camp.

Browns general manager John Dorsey had reservations about the series, but feels the team is equipped to handle the added scrutiny.

HBO's decision to pick Cleveland is no surprise, since the team finished 0-16 last season but has revamped its roster.

Not to mention the fact that no fan base in America has experienced "hard knocks" with the degree of ferocity and regularity that Browns fans have.

Beyond the presence of Mayfield, the brash Heisman Trophy victor, the Browns should provide a fair dose of intriguing storylines, from coach Hue Jackson, who is 1-31 in two seasons in Cleveland, to the additions of quarterback Tyrod Taylor and wide receiver Jarvis Landry.

Dorsey, in his first season as Browns' GM, chimed in last month on Browns radio partner ESPN Cleveland, saying he doesn't think "anything good" comes from appearing on the show.

Instead, NFL Films and HBO will follow the Browns this summer, ensuring that the "quarterback competition" between Tyrod Taylor and Baker Mayfield will be overdramatized (Taylor will be the Week 1 starter). "We're excited about what we're building within our organization and feel good about the progress we've made this offseason". Being able to bring our fans in so they can get to know our players and our organization in a different way will be a huge positive for us. "This will be a great opportunity for our team". But after talking about it as an organization, he feels much better about the situation.

A 30-person NFL Films crew will shoot more than 2,000 hours of footage over the course of the series.
