US To Announce New Economic Sanctions On Russia

Russia claims Syira chemical attack was staged by United Kingdom

Former FBI Director James Comey, who was removed from his post by Trump, also compared the U.S. leader to a mafia boss in reality and said he was "morally unfit" to be president, stoking controversies.

Monday's comment from the White House came in contrast to Haley's specific announcement on Sunday. As he spoke, explosions rocked Damascus.

"We're not going to leave until we know we've accomplished those things", she said.

"They will go directly to any sort of companies that were dealing with equipment related to Assad and chemical weapons use", U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley told CBS' Face the Nation on Sunday.

Russia's defence ministry later said the United States and its allies had hit military targets and not just research facilities, Interfax news agency reported.

Britain, France and the United States all say Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces were responsible for using chemical weapons in Douma, which Syria and Russian Federation deny.

"We convinced him to limit the strikes to chemical weapons when at the same time there was a burst of tweets that did not escape you", Macron said. "They are crimes of a monster instead".

The targeted al-Shirai air base is located in al-Dimas, the commander told Reuters. The "very precise" operation was also carried out without declaring war on the Assad regime or with engendering any collateral damage with regard to the Russians, he said.

The team aims to collect samples, interview witnesses and document evidence to determine whether banned toxic munitions were used, although it is not permitted to assign blame for the attack.

"The global community will not allow chemical weapons to come back into our everyday life", she said. Russian Federation has long backed the Assad regime and has repeatedly vetoed UN Security Council resolutions concerning chemical weapons.

Syria and Russian Federation deny unleashing poison gas on April 7 during their offensive on Douma, which ended with the recapture of the town that had been the last rebel stronghold near the capital Damascus.

Also on Monday, Western countries accused Moscow on Monday of preventing inspectors from reaching the site of a suspected poison gas attack in Syria and said Russians or Syrians may have tampered with evidence on the ground. They said Haley is one of the most disciplined and cautious members of the Cabinet, especially when it comes to her public appearances.

It was not immediately clear how extensive the strikes were. Russian President Vladimir Putin condemned the US-led strikes as "an act of aggression" that will only worsen the humanitarian crisis in Syria. In a reference to the US, he said that "it would only benefit those who are protected by the ocean and expect to sit there and engage in continuous efforts to stir up the region in order to advance their geopolitical goals".

Trump made clear in his eight-minute television address that he is wary of a deeper entanglement in Syria, where about 2,000 US troops have been deployed to fight Islamic State.

Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Lebanon's Hezbollah group that has hundreds of fighters backing Assad's forces, said the airstrikes failed to "terrorize or break the spirits" of Syria and its allies.
