The strikes early on Saturday came in response to a suspected chemical weapons attack in the former rebel stronghold of Douma last weekend. Arab governments which oppose President Bashar al Assad, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, expressed approval, while popular reaction in some Arab capitals appeared to be mixed.

"We specifically identified these targets to mitigate the risk of Russian forces being involved", Dunford told reporters, adding the United States military advised Russia of airspace that would be used in the strike but did not "pre-notify them".

Rudskoi says the Syrian military used Soviet-made air defense missile systems with high efficiency, shooting down all of the missiles aimed at four key Syrian air bases.

Witnesses told CNN that they heard explosions in the capital city of Damascus and that they began while Trump was making his address. Al-Alam Arabic TV displayed scenes of public gathering in support of the government in the streets of Warzah in Damascus near an attack site.

In Russia, an ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, the strikes have been portrayed as a violation of worldwide law and undermining Syria's chances of peace.

Russia's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova also accused the USA and its allies of attacking Syria at a time when there was a chance for peace.

Pentagon officials said the missiles first struck a scientific research centre near Damascus that develops, produces and tests chemical and biological weapons.

A highly placed Russian politician is likening President Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler after the launch of airstrikes against Syria, and says he regards the action as a move against Russia.

U.S. President Donald Trump said he ordered the U.S. military to launch precision strikes on the targets associated with the chemical weapon capabilities of the Syrian army. Syrians crowded onto the streets in noisy demonstrations of defiance afterward and their ally Russian Federation denounced the attack.

Two US officials said attacks could continue beyond tonight, with a senior administration official saying "this isn't over".

In an address to the American people on Friday, Trump called out Russian Federation and Iran for supporting Assad's regime.

It's decisive and deliberate action against the Assad regime's use of chemical weapons that killed innocent Syrian civilians, including defenseless children.

For all its firepower, the missile attack may again amount to just a warning - albeit stronger than last year's - that further chemical weapons attacks will incur similar retaliatory strikes.

Syrian air defenses shot down 13 missiles fired in the US -led attack on the country on Saturday, Syrian state TV said.

"Russia is convening an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the aggressive actions by the USA and its allies", the president said.

But the US, United Kingdom and France all expressed confidence that chlorine gas and a nerve agent were used in the April 7 attack, and that Assad's forces were behind it.
