'Untruthful slime ball': Donald Trump blasts former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey

Speaker of the House Paul Ryan speaks to the media on Capitol Hill in Washington U.S

Trump didn't take the revelations lying down, calling out Comey on Twitter a "weak and untruthful slime ball", and a "proven LEAKER & LIAR".

On Sunday night, Comey's interview will prompt numerous Google searches about Comey, who served as the seventh Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from September 4, 2013, until he was sacked on May 9, 2017.

The comments come as Mr. Comey embarks on a book tour to promote "A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership", an account of his time in the Trump administration.

"It's nearly like Comey wrote some of the stuff in the book just to get under Trump's skin and goad him into saying something outrageous", said the former official.

In an interview broadcast Friday on ABC's Good Morning America, Comey said Trump also seemed obsessed with an unverified claim that during a trip to Moscow he watched two prostitutes engage in an unusual sexual act.

Asked if the president wanted the Justice Department to investigate Comey, White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Sunday on ABC's "This Week" that she was not aware of a specific request, but "if they feel there was any wrongdoing, they should certainly look into that just as they do on a number of other topics".

Speaking with reporters at the White House, presidential counselor Kellyanne Conway said Comey "seems like a disgruntled ex-employee; after all, he was sacked".

Interested in James Comey? And Comey has several to touch upon, notably his refusal to let Cheney and White House staffer David Addington expand a counterterrorism surveillance program code-named Stellar Wind in 2004. I urged Kelly not to do that, arguing that the country needed principled people around this president.

"And I have every confidence that Jim Comey accurately copied, collected, recounted what exactly went on during those discussions", former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said.

Trump wrote on Twitter Friday: "He is a weak and unethical slimeball who was, as time has proven, a awful Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation".

Third, Trump gets into his claim that there's a partisan conspiracy working against him - claiming former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe is corrupt, and that this is all somehow actually Hillary Clinton's fault.

Trump has said he fired Comey because of his handling of the FBI's investigation into Clinton's email practices.

Among other details in the book, Comey describes Trump repeatedly asking him to consider investigating an allegation about Trump and Russian prostitutes urinating on a bed in a Moscow hotel, in order to prove that it was a lie. "I don't use words like that".

In a passage that has ruffled feathers in White House, Comey adds: "I paused and then made a decision to add something".

Comey testified in June that he gave some of his memos of conversations he had with Trump to a Columbia University professor and that he had written the memos specifically to avoid including classified information. "I'm just trying to do the right thing.'" And Obama replied: "I know". "I don't remember consciously thinking about that, but it must have been". And in an excerpt cited by The New York Times, he writes of the president: "His face appeared slightly orange, with bright white half-moons under his eyes where I assumed he placed small tanning goggles".
