Unnao rape case: CBI makes second arrest

Midnight Drama as Rape Accused BJP MLA Meets Cops, Returns Without Surrendering

The Congress on Saturday demanded that Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath be sacked for "utterly failing in his constitutional duties as CM" and for "safeguarding the interests of Unnao rape accused BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar".

According to an official, Sengar is now being interrogated by the CBI sleuths.

The MLA's counsel Satyendra Singh did not oppose the CBI's remand plea, saying, "We are willing to cooperate in the investigation". "We have referred the matter to the CBI...our government will not compromise on the zero-tolerance policy it has followed against crime and corruption since the beginning".

The victim tried to set herself ablaze outside Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's residence on last Sunday, claiming inaction in the rape case that took place in 2017.

Investigations to prove one way or another actually began in earnest when Adityanath constituted a Special Investigation Team which handed its first report to CBI - handing over the investigations as well.

A girl, speaking to APN News, said, "The incidents of Unnao and Jammu and Kashmir - the rape cases there - have shocked us".

In the second FIR, the CBI has booked the rape victim's father, Surender Singh, on the basis of an FIR filed by the UP Police on April 3 for criminal intimidation, voluntarily causing hurt, threat and unlawful possession of arms.

The CBI on Saturday also took into custody Shashi Singh, the woman who allegedly took the victim to the MLA on the day of the crime in June past year.

The Supreme Court will also hear next week a plea for CBI probe into the Unnao gangrape case.

Earlier in the day, a CBI team also visited the hotel in Unnao where the victim has been housed under police protection to take her statement.

"Happy that CBI confirmed his arrest".

Earlier, the victim, who along with her mother and uncle, were brought here under tight security in the morning, underwent tests at the Ram Manohar Lohia hospital. While no action was taken on her plea even then, her father was picked up by UP police, allegedly beaten up and tortured by MLA's brother, and died in police custody after making a dying declaration naming the MLA and his brother.
