Uttar Pradesh BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, who has been charged of raping a 18-year-old woman in June 2017, has been detained by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for questioning in the wee the hours on Friday. He was brought to CBI's Hazratganj office at Lucknow at 4:30 am on Friday.

However, Sengar, the Bharatiya Janata Party legislator from Unnao, has yet not been arrested.

The case came into the limelight after the victim tried to immolate herself on Sunday outside Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's residence, alleging police inaction against Sengar. The girl's father, who was later taken in custody and died with serious injury marks on his body.

The CBI registered three separate cases related to the alleged rape of a woman by a BJP MLA and his brother, officials said.

Under the pressure and massive uproar, The UP government had yesterday made a decision to lodge an FIR against MLA Sengar in the case and refer it to the CBI for investigation.

The court, which is expected to pass an order tomorrow, took strong objection to the delay in the MLA's arrest, as it sought details of the action taken by the government in the matter.

"Police was not ready to register FIR of the minor rape victim". Five cops of Makhi police station, and two doctors of district hospital had been suspended for laxity in the performance of their respective duties in the case.

According to Chaturvedi, the SIT conducted preliminary investigation and then filed a report after which an FIR was registered and still the state government wants to conduct further probe before arresting the accused MLA. Uttar Pradesh police's failure to arrest Sengar was noticed by the Allahabad High Court too, which on Thursday asked why the accused BJP MLA had not been arrested. "We have no objection to the inquiry but he should be arrested first-.why is he being shielded", she said. He said that the government has chose to provide adequate security to the victim and her family and other witnesses in the case.
