Russia: Syria chemical attack staged by foreign agents

"We had an early warning of the strike from the Russians ... and all military bases were evacuated a few days ago", the official said.

Syria and Russian Federation deny unleashing poison gas during their offensive on Douma this month, which ended with the recapture of the town that had been the last rebel stronghold near the capital Damascus.

Konashenkov said that "powerful pressure from London was exerted on representatives of the so-called White Helmets to quickly stage the premeditated provocation".

On April 10, Damascus sent an official invitation to the OPCW to visit Eastern Ghouta.

Gen. Igor Konashenkov said that images of victims of the purported attack were staged with "Britain's direct involvement, " without providing evidence.

Biological samples from the area of the attack in Syria have tested positive for chlorine and a sarin-like nerve agent, according to a USA official who's familiar with the USA analysis of the test results.

Russian President Vladimir Putin denounced joint American, British, and French missile strikes on Syria as "an act of aggression against a sovereign state" and said he would seek an emergency meeting of the United Nations' Security Council.

Russia's defense ministry said the United States and its allies had hit military targets and not just research facilities, Interfax news agency reported.

The United Nations says more than 133,000 people were estimated to have fled in four weeks from the Syrian enclave of eastern Ghouta.

On Thursday, Russia's military said Douma has been brought under full control of the Syrian government under a Russia-mediated deal that secured the evacuation of the rebels and thousands of civilians after it was recaptured by Syrian forces.

But Nebenzia said the goal was to oust President Bashar al-Assad from power.

Meanwhile, on Friday Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah said his group, Syria, Iran and Russian Federation are not scared by Trump's threats.

"The evacuation operation should wrap up before the OPCW experts enter Douma", Abdel Rahman said.

The US-led strikes were the biggest global attack on President Bashar Al Assad's regime since the start of Syria's seven-year war.

Vassily Nebenzia, Moscow's U.N. ambassador said he "cannot exclude" war between the United States and Russian Federation.

Erdogan also told reporters on Friday that tensions between the two countries over a suspected chemical attack in the Damascus suburb of Douma now seem to have eased. "We hope there will be no point of no return".

Russia, a Syrian ally, has warned the USA that air strikes risk a new war.

During a phone call late on Thursday, UK Prime Minister Theresa May and US President Donald Trump agreed on the need to deter chemical weapon use in Syria.

The strikes targeted three sites believed to be where the Syrian government develops chemical weapons.

The resolution involves finishing the compound weapon program and using the stockpiles destroyed, a cessation of hostilities and compliance with all Security Council resolutions, acquiring the Assad regimen reunite into Geneva talks and liability to the use of the weapons and other war offenses from Syria.

Erdogan says: "What we insisted on tenaciously was the fact that is not right for tensions to heat up; we made requests concerning the restitution of peace and the end of the tragedy that is going on".

Russia's ambassador to the U.S. warned that there would be consequences for the attacks.

Witnesses, survivors and medical workers have told journalists that scores of people were treated for breathing difficulties that night and that the victims emitted a strong smell of chlorine, which has been widely used in the past as a weapon of war.
