'Rampage' Wins Close Race With 'A Quiet Place' at Weekend Box Office

This Mash Up of 'A Quiet Place' & 'The Office' Has Us Shaking

The over-the-top action movie pulled in $34.5 million for its opening weekend to sit in the No. 1 spot in the U.S. and Canada. Heading into the weekend, tracking showed Rampage launching to $35 million-$40 million.

The global figures will certainly bring some relief to studio execs sweating at the U.S. disappointment, although with a total opening weekend haul that looks set to be less than $70M, the movie still has some way to go to make back its $120M production budget.

Rampage will need to demonstrate staying power, like Johnson's recent hit Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, and/or do big business internationally to be considered a success.

In its first weekend out, Dwayne Johnson tried to Rampage through the second-week returns for John Krasinki's horror film, but between The Rock and A Quiet Place, it mostly ended up a stalemate where both sides could claim victory.

Truth or Dare, the latest microbudget collaboration from Universal and Blumhouse, opened to strong $19.2 million in the US despite competition from A Quiet Place.

Both films will have a chance to add to their totals next week (with the only new competition coming in the form of I Feel Pretty, Super Troopers 2, and Traffik) before the real 2,000 pound gorilla of the summer season, Avengers: Infinity War, opens nationwide on April 26. That's an impressive number for a movie that reportedly cost about $3.5 million to make and was shredded by critics. The film has been received poorly with a B- CinemaScore grade and a 15 percent RT score. Ready Player One was pushed to fourth on $11.2 million, while comedy Blockers rounds out the top fifth for $10.2 million.

Fox Searchlight also expanded Wes Anderson's stop-motion movie Isle of Dogs to 1,939 theaters (up from 554), collecting an estimated $5 million (good for seventh place) and upping its domestic total to about $18.5 million.
