Protests in Chennai after professor caught luring students into prostitution

The assistant professor of the autonomous college was finally arrested from her house after she locked herself when the police reached there.

The entire controversy began last month when Nirmala Devi, an assistant professor of Mathematics of the college had a 20-minute telephonic conversation with four undergraduate girl students after asking one of the girls to switch on the phone's speaker.

The parents of the students of the college are now looking up to the Department of Education, Govt. of Tamil Nadu to step in and conduct a thorough inquiry to find out the culprits at the management level at the Madurai Kamaraj University.

"It is important to enquire into such matters immediately and without prejudice so that the guilty do not escape without punishment", the Governor said.

In the audio clip that was circulated widely on WhatsApp and Facebook, she is heard promising students "good support financially and academically".

When the girls indicate appears to be uninterested, she was insistent saying that it was for "a very, very high-level person".

On Monday following a protest by student groups the teacher, a mother of two grown up children, was arrested on charges of trafficking and Information Technology Act. Because they are high ranking officials of the university.

She warned the students against disclosing the offer to others, claiming "they would hurt their reputation" in doing so. "I am hearing about such an incident only now from you". In the audio conversation, the professor is heard saying that the Governor is not an "old man". During the conversation, Devi says she has access to the Governor and adds that "he is not a grandfather anyway".

A senior police officer privy to Devi's questioning said she admitted that the voice in the audio clip was hers. The university has no role in the exams.

"Dating takes social courage and we need to teach our young people the virtue of social courage", Cronin said in a statement. "I have ordered the probe team to submit its report in 15 days", he told reporters.

The professor started with the assignment 12 years ago but today, she has a different version of the assignment and gives it only for extra credit to her students. "Personally, I think we should adopt the punishment methods of the Arab countries".

DMK chief MK Stalin sought a CBI probe into the matter.
