NAFTA deal close, Pence tells reporters

While in Peru, Vice President Pence briefs US lawmakers on Syrian airstrikes

Pence went one step further than most US officials have said publicly since the strikes so far, claiming that further use of chemical weapons will mean a "price to pay" - military action.

Washington D.C. [USA], April 15 (ANI): United States Vice President Michael Pence on Saturday said that Russian Federation is "on the wrong side of the war" while referring to recent strikes on Syria by the U.S. along with Germany and France.

"The objective of the mission the commander in chief gave our military forces and our allies was completely accomplished - with swift professionalism", Pence told reporters, noting there were "no reported civilian casualties".

Pence repeatedly praised the "strong leadership" of President Donald Trump and American allies in responding to the chemical attacks in Syria. "It's time for Russian Federation to get the message President Trump delivered last night".

Mr. Trump was criticized Saturday morning for tweeting "Mission Accomplished!" after the strikes, a phrase reminiscent of former President George W. Bush's May 2003 "Mission Accomplished" speech, declaring success in Iraq shortly after the USA -led invasion.

Pence pivoted to the US response to the suspected chemical weapons attack in Syria as he sought to build support for further isolating Venezuela, which has faced USA sanctions amid a political crisis led by President Nicolas Maduro.

Earlier in the day, Pentagon officials suggested they had proof that the Assad regime was behind the attack, but said they couldn't elaborate on the information because it was classified.

Noting that "you're known by the company you keep", Pence said Russian Federation needs to join other nations in opposing the use of chemical weapons in Syria and "live up to the commitments they made".

"Our message to Russian is, 'You're on the wrong side of history, ' " Pence also said.

Pence also said leaders at the summit, which is focused on the collapse of democracy in Venezuela, saoid they support the missile strikes in Syria.

"But we believe there is a real possibility that we could arrive at an agreement within the next several weeks for a renegotiated NAFTA that'll be a better deal for the American people".

Pence said Trump's call for Mexico to pay for the US -built wall "did not come up" in meetings.

USA negotiators discussing changes to the North American Free Trade Agreement also recently floated the idea that 40 percent of automotive production must occur in areas paying wages of between $16 to $19 per hour.

Pence claimed Trump's telephone for Mexico to cover for your USA -built wall "didn't not come up" in meetings.
