Led airstrikes on Syria justified: Israeli official

Israel on high alert in anticipation of Iranian retaliation for air strike

"The resistance front will be strengthened and it will have more capacity to act against (U.S.) acts of intervention".

On Monday seven Iranian personnel were among 14 people killed in an early-morning strike on the T-4 airbase in Syria, with regime allies Iran and Russian Federation blaming Israel for the attack. The target and the timing are both notable for separate reasons.

In an interview with the BBC in late February, Iran's deputy foreign minister refused to confirm that Iran had sent the drone into Israel and said that the drone belonged to the Syrian army.

Following the Western airstrikes in Syria, Arab news agencies claimed on Saturday night that fighter jets targeted an Iranian base near Aleppo.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in a statement backed the strikes, saying they "will reduce the regime's ability to further attack the people of Syria with chemical weapons". It is for this reason that when the base was hit by a series of missiles, there was immediate speculation that the operation was an American one.

A USA embassy spokeswoman confirmed to Reuters that Israel had been notified before the strikes, but she provided no further details. "We warned that such actions will not be left without consequences", Anatoly Antonov, Russian Ambassador to the U.S. said.

"A short time ago, I ordered the United States Armed Forces to launch precision strikes on targets associated with the chemical weapons capabilities of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad". It had been sighted taking off from a base in Syria and was intercepted after it crossed into Israeli territory, the IDF said.

"All precautions must be taken to minimise harm to civilians in any military action", Raed Jarrar, advocacy director for the Middle East and North Africa at rights watchdog Amnesty International USA said in a statement. In a callback to the 1970s, Israel is again navigating between two outside superpowers who are working to shape the Middle East, and Russia's response to Israel is more about the US than it is about anything that Israel is doing.

He added that the USA military is not aware of any civilian deaths.

Syria's T-4 base, near Palmyra, that was bombed by Israeli jets. "We advise Iran not to do so because Israel is determined to go until the end". "For the Russians, they don't want to be seen as supporting direct confrontation with Israel, but do believe the higher profile of alleged Israeli attacks in Syria are an increasing concern for them".

Public anger and objections to Iran's presence in Syria, and people's frustration with a collapsing economy, turned into protests in January.

Analysts said the limited nature of the strike probably would not compel Russian Federation or Iran into taking significant action.

Iran's pragmatist President Hassan Rouhani also warned that the US -led missile attack on Syria would lead to further destruction in the Middle East, the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported.
