Korea Picks 'Peace, a New Start' as Slogan for Inter-Korean Summit

South Koreans may visit North again ahead of first summit in decade

One way to resolve the conflict could involve returning the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone to its original state, the Munhwa Ilbo newspaper said. Koreans from all four corners of the peninsula hope that Panmunjom - for so long a symbol of division - may become a symbol of peace as the regular meeting place for the leaders of the two Koreas.

The April 27 summit between South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un - the third-ever meeting of leaders from the two Koreas - may see the pair release a joint statement saying that they will seek to ease military tensions and to end confrontation, according to the official.

North Korea and the rich, democratic South are technically still at war because their 1950-53 conflict ended in a truce, not a peace treaty.

Experts said it would be hard for the two sides to sign the peace treaty, given the differences of opinion on how to sign the deal.

South Korea has listed 3 main issues to be discussed at its summit with North Korea next week.

Kim and U.S. President Donald Trump are expected to hold their own summit talks sometime next month or in June.

The report said the focus of the inter-Korean summit's agenda would be threefold: denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, a peace deal, and progress in inter-Korean relations.

Last week, Secretary of State nominee CIA Director Mike Pompeo said North Korea should not expect rewards from talks until it takes irreversible steps to give up its nuclear weapons.

The South's presidential Blue House said on Tuesday that Seoul might send special envoys to North Korea if necessary to ensure the success of the highly anticipated summit.

Kim is scheduled to make history when he meets President Moon at a summit just inside South Korean territory on April 27.

Mr Im added that a direct hotline between the two leaders would be operational by Friday for possible trials before the summit.
