Katie Taylor dominates Victoria Bustos to become unified world champion

Katie Taylor will aim to unify the women's world lightweight title against Argentina's IBF champion Victoria Bustos in NY on Saturday night.

The Bray fighter dominated the bout, winning on all the judges cards with a score of 99-91, 99-91, 98-92, to give her her second world title since turning pro.

"I'm thrilled to unify the titles".

Her next opponent could to be Brazilian Rose Volante, who became the WBO World champion last December.

Bustos clearly had the respect of Taylor before the bout, but she seemed to gain more of it with her never-say-die attitude. Taylor, who made her ninth walk to the ring as a professional last night, used her aggression and superior technique to stifle her Argentian dance-partner for the vast majority of the fight and while Bustos showed good heart, Katie never looked to be in danger of letting her lead slip.

Reflecting further on the dominant victory over Bustos, Taylor added: "It was a tough contest". I had to work for every second of every round there.

'She just kept coming and coming, but I was prepared for a tough ten round fight today and I needed to be sharp'.

Her opponent Victoria Bustos made life hard for the former Olympian, causing her problems in the later rounds, but Taylor held on and had done enough early on to ensure the title was hers.

The five-time amateur world champion had the better of Bustos in every department.

"I had to be clever right from the start, she was a clever counter puncher, but I think I mixed it up well between boxing and fighting her tonight".
