Kathua, Unnao rape cases: Nationwide protests erupt demanding justice for victims

BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has lauded the country's political leadership, judiciary, media and the civil society for standing with the J&K Government to ensure justice in the Kathua rape and murder case, saying that it will go a long way in restoring the people's confidence in the institutions. Mehbooba Mufti's party, the People's Democratic Party, has termed the resignation of two BJP ministers as a confidence-building measure that would strengthen the alliance.

Veteran lawyer Deepika Rajawat, who is appearing in the Jammu & Kashmir High Court on behalf of the Kathua rape-murder victim's family, alleged threat to her life from the supporters of the accused.

PDP leader and state minister Naeem Akhtar said the party appreciated the "support and solidarity" that people have shown for the eight-year-old Kathua girl.

He said, "Both Mehbooba Mufti and Omer Abdullah being the main faces of main stream politics should accept their failure and confess that nothing happens in Jammu & Kashmir unless New Delhi does not want and allow any thing to happen". Later, during investigation, the police arrested the caretaker and alleged that he was the mastermind of kidnapping, rape and killing of the girl from a nomadic tribe with an ulterior motive of terrifying the community and drive them out of the village.

However, he said, since there was a public demand for a CBI probe, "I said we will put forth the demand before the chief minister".

As Maliwal continued her fast in Delhi, authorities in Patna said a minor girl was gang-raped on Sunday.

The senior BJP leader admitted that the two ministers displayed lack of discretion by taking part in the rally, but made it clear that there was no attempt to sabotage the investigations as charged by the Congress party.

"The shameless SSP Kuthua Suliman Chowdhary worked like a private servant for Lal Singh and other BJP leaders besides those of Ekta Manch", he said.

The Kathua girl was kidnapped on January 10 and her body was found on January 17.

After facing flak for his silence, PM Narendra Modi on Friday said, "The incidents of the recent days are a challenge to social justice". Sorry to say.We believe that you can't do anything against the criminals.

He accused the Congress party of playing double standards.

"Certain amount of discretion should have been maintained".

The crime branch of Jammu and Kashmir Police has submitted a chargesheet in the case against eight accused, including two special police officers and a sub-inspector and a head constable for destroying evidence. "The directive.must be withdrawn", Madav said while replying to a question about the demographic changes in Jammu due to settlement of Rohingya refugees and Tribals on encroached state lands in Jammu city, which are two major concerns of minority Dogras of Jammu.
