"It is with deep regret that I have to withdraw from tomorrow's Boston Marathon", the 26-year-old said in a statement.

An American woman hasn't won the Boston Marathon since Lisa Larsen Rainsberger in 1985. Of her experience training for the marathon all while raising funds for FamilyAid Boston, she states: "This is also my very first marathon and I'm giving my all to help ensure I can cross that finish line".

Huddle has been a success at shorter distances, although her only marathon result was a third-place finish at NY in 2016.Flanagan, 36, missed last year's race with an injury but won at NY with extra rest.

Hasay's late withdrawal from Boston is a bummer, as she was one of the favorites to end the American women's 33-year title drought.

The cloud on Hasey's horizon, however, is that she has reportedly been suffering from a foot injury.

Although Huddle's time in her marathon debut was on 2:28:13 she has the competitive temperament to make her second attempt at the distance even more memorable.

The two-time world champion has also won at London in 2014 and NY in 2010.Kirui is trying to become the first back-to-back men's victor at Boston since compatriot Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot in 2006-2008.

A year ago the double world champion and victor of London and New York City titles followed up her Boston win by taking silver at the World Championships in London.

More recently Rupp has become only the second USA runner to break the hour mark for the half-marathon. "I've also seen the impact generosity can have and because I believe so much in the work FamilyAid Boston does, I am doing everything I can to not only cross the finish line on April 16 but to spread awareness about this important cause".
