Golf team finishes sixth at New Jersey tournament

Rock Port boys golf coach Shawn Shineman is happy with his team's start to the 2018 season. Juniors Austin Bishop and Kyle McAbee each shot 77s in their first round, as did senior Samuel Shih, who returned to competition after almost two months out.

The top scorer among those three was junior Kaytln Hasprey who shot +36 par.

After his opening round of 69 - which put him into a fourth-place tie heading into Round 2 - Hadwin managed to vault up the leaderboard into a first-place tie before he even teed off Friday morning, after plenty of leaderboard shuffling from golfers who teed off earlier than him. Arkansas-Fort Smith is in second at 7-over par before the log jam begins as the next six teams are separated by just 20 strokes.

DeSombre continued her strong start to her inaugural spring season with an 82 (+10), matching her previous day's performance and earning an eighth-place finish in the field.

Rounding out WCU's scoring five was freshman Michael Coe, up two spots into a tie for 60th overall with a final-round score of 75 to shoot 228, while senior Jackson Bishop advanced three spots into a tie for 62nd at 230 for the tournament.

Guetersloh shot +16 in her first round, she made 10 bogeys in that round.

Both teams have on its schedule to play at New Ulm Invite next Thursday but the weather needs to improve for that tournament not to be cancelled.

"Last year I was shooting upper 70s, but this year the first match I shot 1-under (70) at Troy Country Club", he said. "We just have to stay dedicated and work on the things we need to work on". It's one of those where ... we have a lot of growing to do.

There was a large gap in separation between Eastern and the teams at the top of the standings, and also in the middle of the standings as far as that is concerned.

After totaling a 299, the Aggies are 11-over par as a team and are already trail the leader, Dallas Baptist, by 17 strokes.

Loyola won the tournament with a score of +38 par. The 11th-ranked Tigers finished 31-under par with a three-round score of 833.
