Batshuayi season 'probably over', but striker has World Cup chance

Michy Batshuayi has confirmed he is likely out for the rest of the season after suffering an ankle injury in Borussia Dortmund's 2-0 loss to Schalke on Sunday.

A statement from the Bundesliga club read: "Michy Batshuayi suffered an ankle injury in the derby with Schalke and will be probably be out of action for the remainder of the season".

Batshuayi is expected to return to Chelsea for the remainder of the season in hope that the medical team at Stamford Bridge can get him back to fitness as soon as possible.

"Well it is not good news for now, my season is probably over, and I won't be able to pay Borussia Dortmund back for their confidence", the Belgian global tweeted. However, he could still recover in time for the FIFA World Cup in Russian Federation.

"Thank you all for the awesome amount of love I received since yesterday".

Batshuayi has scored nine goals in 14 games since his January loan move.

The injury has come at a terrible time for Batshuayi, with his spot in Belgium's World Cup squad under threat if he can not recover in time.

Batshuayi is a key player for Belgium's national team, and Belgian manager Roberto Martínez hopes he will be fit before the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation. Wishing my teammates the best for the final days.

Dortmund boss Peter Stoger admitted his fears after the game.
