Alabama will visit South Bend on September 2, 2028, and Notre Dame will take a trip down south to kick off the 2029 season in Tuscaloosa.

It's just going to be a little while.

"We are excited to be able to add a home-and-home series with a team like Notre Dame", Alabama coach Nick Saban said in a news release. The schools say they'll open the 2028 season in South Bend and 2029 in Tuscaloosa.

The first two contests occurred in the 1973 Sugar Bowl and the 1975 Orange Bowl with the late Ara Parseghian as the Notre Dame head coach.

Notre Dame and Alabama have not met since the 2012 BCS National Championship in January of 2013 when Alabama blew out the Irish 42-14 in Miami.

The two schools are synonymous with college football. The three other games took place in bowl games with the national title on the line.

"This series speaks to Notre Dame's commitment to play against the best that college football has to offer", said Notre Dame vice president and James E. Rohr director of athletics Jack Swarbrick. The Irish will visit the Crimson Tide on September 1, 2029.

Notre Dame and Alabama have played on six previous occasions, with the Irish leading the series 5-1.

Notre Dame leads the all-time series 5-2.

The four regular season meetings were first held in 1976 and 1980, and then in 1986-87. Notre Dame has played the Crimson Tide twice in Birmingham, Ala.

No. 2 Alabama ended its 0-4 frustration against the 1-2 Irish with a 28-10 victory in Birmingham on October 4, 1986.
