7 inmates dead, 17 hurt in SC prison fight

'Ongoing incident' reported at dangerous South Carolina prison

Seven inmates were killed and 17 others were injured overnight at a SC prison - the fourth deadly incident at the facility in the past year. Logan said Lee Correctional Institution, like most other SC prisons, is struggling to find enough workers, but he doesn't believe anything could be done once things got that far out of control.

"The incident at Lee CI resulted in 17 inmates requiring outside medical attention and 7 inmates were killed", the department said on its Twitter account. Four inmates were killed by a pair of prisoners in the state's Kirkland Correctional Institution previous year.

The spokesman for Lee Correctional Institution says the fights started around 7 p.m. Sunday night.

Authorities say it took eight hours to quell the riots and secure the prison.

Lee County Fire/Rescue said ambulances from at least seven jurisdictions lined up outside the prison to tend to the wounded. One inmate killed another in February this year. The local coroner's office also responded.

Lee Correctional Institution is one of South Carolina's highest-security prisons, which means the inmates are generally tightly monitored and their movements inside the facility are limited.

The prison houses about 1,600 male inmates, the majority of them in general housing rather than more restricted housing, according to state records.
