The matchup with South Dakota State is Ohio State's first tournament game since 2015, when they were one of the last at-large teams picked by the selection committee.

South Dakota State's third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament will have them heading west to play a team from the Big Ten in Round One.

The depth of the Villanova roster has been the team's recipe for success this season. Mike Daum led the Jackrabbits by averaging a double-double per game with 23.8 points and 10.4 rebounds per game while Brandon Key led South Dakota State in assists with 3.3 assists per game this season. She also averages a team-best 6.9 rebounds per contest and is second on the team with 83 assists. Kam Williams has appeared in 10 postseason games, including four starts, averaging 5.8 points and 1.6 rebounds per game.

The Sunday selection show followed a surprising season for the Buckeyes (24-8), who rose to the ranking of 13th nationally during the first season for new head coach Chris Holtmann. It is the 16th time in the last 19 years overall that Villanova has qualified for a national postseason tournament. Earning the fifth seed is an accomplishment by itself for the Buckeyes this year.

The Buckeyes (24-8) are making their 28th NCAA Tournament appearance and finished tied for second in the Big 10 standings. Stephanie Mavunga averages 16.5 points per contest, while grabbing 10.8 rebounds as well. As a team, South Dakota State is scoring the 6th-most points per game in the country at 84.9 per game on 47% shooting from the field, 40.3% from behind the 3-point line and 76% from the foul line this season. The Jackrabbits were 12-2 in conference play during the regular season and have won 10 of their past 11 games.

On the other side of the Villanova bracket is a first round game between No. 1 seed Notre Dame (29-3) and No. 16 seed Cal State Northridge (19-15). Defensively, South Dakota State yields 74.1 points per game against the opposing teams.
