Tripura: BJP-IPFT cabinet to be sworn in on 08th March (Thursday)

The massive victory threw the spotlight on Biplab Deb, who took over two years ago as the BJP's Tripura chief, its youngest in any state.

Debbarma defeated the CPI (M)'s Ramendra Debbarma in Takarjal constituency.

Mumbai: A day after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) victory at the polls in the north-eastern states, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday said the party will register a victory in poll-bound Karnataka as well.

Newly elected MLAs of the BJP and its ally IPFT in Tripura will meet here on March 6 (tomorrow) to elect their leader. When asked how they plan to cope up with the functioning of the new government with its inexperienced MLAs, Deodhar said, "There are eight who have previously served as MLAs and ministers".

"The BJP has not only won the elections but secured 49 to 50 per cent votes in (the three) northeast states".

Clarifying the meaning of "respectable" positions, IPFT president N.C. Debbarma said it meant proportionate representation of IPFT MLAs in the Cabinet and allocation of major departments to them. "The word development does not exist in the dictionary of CPI-M". "The governor has invited me to form the government since I have the numbers", Mr Sangma said.

The BJP leadership did not make any comment on the IPFTs demand.

Party president NC Debbarma told ANI, "The elections are a separate issue, our demand has for years been to create a separate state for tribal people of Tripura".

The tribal council area comprises two-third of the state's territory and the tribals form one-third of the population.

The IPFT struck an alliance with the BJP before the elections on the basis of a common minimum agenda, which included formation of a high-power committee with representations from the central and state governments and the indigenous community to address the problems of the tribals.
