Tillerson shortens Africa trip for 'pressing issues' in Washington

United States' Secretary of State, Mr. Rex Tillerson has suspended his trip to Nigeria to attend to an urgent assignment back home.

"Due to demands in the Secretary's schedule, he is returning to the US one day early after concluding official meetings in Chad and Nigeria", Under Secretary of State Steve Goldstein told reporters.

Tillerson's agenda is still unclear in this country, shaken by the unexpected meeting this week between President Uhuru Kenyatta and his rival Raila Odinga that resulted in the mutual commitment to work together for the unity and reconciliation of the people of Kenya.

He arrived in Nairobi on Friday and was also scheduled to have a working lunch with Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Monica Juma as well as meet with American diplomats serving at the new U.S. Embassy. Tillerson, 65, cancelled some events in Kenya on Saturday, saying he was feeling unwell.

He later said Tillerson was "feeling better" and would resume his schedule on Sunday.

"He is also expected to discuss how to advance peace and security, promote good governance, and spur mutually beneficial trade and investment with the president".

Tillerson was to travel to Chad and Nigeria on Monday after leaving Kenya as scheduled but he is said to have scrapped plans to spend the night in Nigeria.

He has visited the Horn of Africa just days after he announced a new $533m aid package for Africa, out of which $128m was earmarked for Nigeria and countries of the Lake Chad region.
