Suspect in Binghamton student murder arrested after fleeing the country

Broome County prosecutors say they are working with federal authorities to investigate and aggressively prosecute the case, the station reports.

Police suspected that Tercero chose to fly to Nicaragua because he has family there.

Police in NY say Tercero is a person of interest in the killing of Haley Anderson, also 22, of Westbury, on Long Island. As CrimeOnline previously reported, Haley Anderson's roommate said she found her friend's body in Tercero's bed on Friday after she went searching for her.

The former boyfriend of the Binghamton nursing student who was found dead on March 10 has been arrested by global authorities in connection with her murder. Earlier this week, Binghamton Police said they believe Tercero, Anderson's ex-boyfriend, had left on a flight from JFK in NY to Nicaragua last Friday.

Cornwell plans to issue an arrest warrant that will be taken to the Department of State to begin the extradition process.

We'd like to thank Binghamton Mayor Rich David, and the Binghamton Police Department, for their tireless efforts and resources over the last week, and United States Senator Chuck Schumer, as we coordinate with the Department of State and Department of Justice.

"It is welcome news that the suspect has been arrested and I applaud law enforcement from Binghamton to Nicaragua for that", Schumer said in an emailed statement Wednesday.

Meanwhile arrangements had been made for Anderson's funeral, for which money is being raised through a GoFundMe page.

A Facebook post by Binghamton University expressed the community's sadness over losing Anderson.
