No ISIS presence in Kashmir: DGP

Amaq News Agency of the Islamic State (IS) on Monday had claimed the terror attack in Srinagar on Sunday. Ahmad was killed and the assailants decamped with his service rifle.

He, however, asserted that there is no ISIS presence in Kashmir. If it (their claims) is true, then it is a matter of worry.

"We are verifying the claims". The police had termed the November 2017 attack claimed by the IS as Al-Amaq's propaganda.

"Without paying much attention to these claims, security forces should focus on eliminating militants who are trying to disrupt peace in Kashmir", he said.

"They (IS) are claiming but it needs verification. There is an element (of suspicion) in it", Vaid said.

State police chief SP Vaid contradicting his earlier statement on the presence of ISIS in the valley told NDTV that it is now clear that the attack was carried out by ISIS and admitted "it is indeed a worrying sign". The attacks, he said, could have been carried out by a lone wolf or a few people driven by ISIS ideology. "There is possibility (of its presence)", he said.

Last month, Union Home Minister of State, Hansraj Ahir told Rajya Sabha: "As per the report, nothing has been approved on the ground that ISIS is operating in any part of the Kashmir valley".

Even Kashmir's separatist leaders, including Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik, had said previous year that the "ongoing freedom struggle" in the state is "indigenous" and has "nothing to do with" global terrorist groups such as the IS or Al-Qaeda. ISIS flags have surfaced in the valley from time to time, especially at the funeral of dead terrorists. Mugees's body was later wrapped in black IS flag before he was buried.

But as far as IS' claims are concerned, authorities have brushed these aside in the past as well. However, the police dismissed the group's claim at the time.

Vaid maintained that as of now, there seemed to be no substantial presence of ISIS on the ground and hoped that it doesn't happen.
