Man shoots and kills himself in front of White House

President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump were in Florida at the time.

Secret Service agents raced to the site following the shooting at around 5pm United Kingdom time on Saturday.

The White House the official home of the USA president, has been placed on lock-down.

The victim suffered a single gunshot wound, and Secret Service personnel did not fire any shots, Secret Service spokeswoman Cathy Milhoan said.

"Adult male has been declared deceased", the Washington, DC Police Department said on Twitter.

"His body remained on scene".

Staff were instructed to take shelter inside after the incident occurred in the afternoon.

Local police will lead an investigation of the shooting, with support from the Secret Service and other agencies, the Secret Service said.

The Secret Service says a man shot himself outside the White House, and medical personnel are on the scene. "We are working to notify next of kin".

The Secret Service also tweeted that pedestrian and vehicular traffic around the White House was affected by the incident. "Trying to learn more".

CBS News security analyst Ron Hosko said: "You can get pretty darn close to the White House with a weapon".

A man has reportedly shot and killed himself outside the White House in Washington.


Last week a woman named Jessica Ford was charged with ramming a van into the barrier at the White House.
