Fiorentina Captain Davide Astori Dies At The Age Of 31

Serie A matches postponed after Astori passes away

'The deeply distraught Florentine is forced to communicate that its captain Davide Astori has died, caught by sudden illness, ' the club communicated on Twitter.

Astori was found dead in his hotel room on Sunday, prompting the postponement of his team's match away to Udinese and all of the day's other Serie A fixtures.

Astori, a 31-year-old Italy global central defender, had been with the club since 2016 having previously played for Milan, Cagliari and Roma.

"Because of the awful and delicate situation, and above all for the respect of his family, sensitivity is called for".

The story broke in the stadium and a picture of Astori appeared on the screens at Marassi, greeted by a standing ovation from the entire arena.

Cagliari postponed their game against Genoa on Sunday morning.

Serie A's official account tweeted: "Shocked by the tragic news, the whole family of the league Serie A huddles around the family of Davide Astori and Fiorentina".

"AS Roma share the pain the football world is feeling for the loss of Davide Astori".

"Today there are no colours, but just profound pain".

Fiorentina said he had suffered from a "sudden illness".

Serie A announced that all of Sunday's matches, including the derby between AC Milan and Inter Milan, would be postponed.

Astori joined Fiorentina in 2016.

Since joining Fiorentina, he played 106 matches and became the leading figure in the Italian club.

Astori made more than 250 appearances in Serie A and was capped 14 times by Italy.

Astori had to wait until March 2011 to make his debut, however, coming on as an early substitute in a 2-0 win over Ukraine.

He made his global debut for Italy in 2011 and represented his country at the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup, scoring a goal in Italy's victorious bronze-medal match. The Azzurri won the contest on penalties.
