Despite Fox's Counterprogramming: Strong Return for 'American Idol

Katy Perry Has the Hots for 'Idol' Contestant Trevor Holmes!

Most of the young aspiring singers auditioning for American Idol Season 16 were born and raised in America.

The Hollywood Reporter's Daniel Fienberg compared the rebooted version of "American Idol" to the most recent previous seasons, noting it became "warmer and fuzzier and less scathing and mocking with each passing year". Despite that, it easily won the night for ABC. When Glaze leaned in to kiss her cheek, Perry quickly turned her head to achieve lip-to-lip contact, sending Glaze to the ground and delighting fellow judges Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan.

That "Idol" managed to scare up such a sizable audience for ABC was particularly noteworthy in light of the fact that the show re-launched under a cloud of controversy. So, the only familiar face (that you saw in the previous seasons) is Ryan Seacrest, who has been hosting the show since its conception in 2002. Michelle's boots weren't just made for walkin' but dancin' too.

Fox's presentation of a 2006 Simpson interview, during which he speculated about how he might have killed his former wife, was watched by 4.4 million people. The average viewership for Fox's final season was 9.4 million viewers.

Later in the evening, ABC wisely used "Idol" as a springboard for its new drama "Deception", a high-concept curiosity about a disgraced magician who uses his powers to solve cases for the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The real test for "Idol" will be on Monday's when it goes up against NBC's The Voice.
