Yu Darvish, Cubs reach $126 million, 6-year deal

That's part of it, I promise.

"We're getting him at a wonderful point in his career where he's matured and is ready to go out and do some special things, with winning a World Series being his top priority", Epstein said. "With these five guys that are in the rotation, I think everybody does an unbelievable job of staying in the moment and understanding what that means".

Jake Arrieta #49 of the Chicago Cubs walks off the field after being relieved in the seventh inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers during Game 4 of the National League Championship Series at Wrigley Field on October 18, 2017 in Chicago.

That was already the expectation even before Yu Darvish announced his decision to leave the Dodgers behind and join the Cubs on a six-year, $126 million deal on February 10. Many thought he'd land a deal worth $30-million a year, not "just" 21.

If Arrieta's market continues to sink, maybe something in the range of a three-year, $80M deal could work with the Phillies. Darvish joins a Cubs rotation of Jon Lester, Jose Quintana, Kyle Hendricks and Tyler Chatwood, who in December agreed to a three-year $38 million deal.

Now, if he remains somewhere close to his insane 11.04 strikeouts per nine innings, he'll easily take over the all-time lead from Randy Johnson, who averaged 10.61.

Bergjans was traded to the Phillies organization in 2016 and had a rough time last season, posting an ERA of over 6.00 with two different minor league teams.

Darvish boasts a 3.42 ERA in 131 starts while averaging 11.04 strikeouts per nine innings, the highest ratio of any pitcher in Major League Baseball history with more than 100 starts. "From the beginning to the end, I really felt that they really wanted me, and I felt that through their communication and how often they've been in touch", said Darvish. That's not to say that he's not without risk, but that's the story with every pitcher to walk the earth. But details only emerge after a player or agent voices their displeasure in the slow-moving offseason.

After the winter meetings, they met with the pitcher in Dallas where both sides clicked right away.

And, what of those Yankees? Not only is this rotation extremely dominant, but four of those guys could be aces on many teams.

While the Cubs didn't necessarily need to make a move this big, they did need to do something. Prior to 2015, no Haverford baseball player had ever been drafted in any round of an MLB draft.

"We all know who he is", said Schwarber. Also, it would be foolish to base your evaluation of Darvish on a two-game sample. He did fashion a 42-15 pitching record with a 2.69 ERA. That is the most free agent pitchers signed by a major league club to major league deals in one off-season since 2010. The Brewers will definitely put a potent lineup on the field, but they're still a little shy on pitching.
