Voters approve of Trump immigration plan: CBS poll

The flood of low-skilled immigrants into the United States has suppressed wages, harmed American workers and strained federal resources.

Columbia and Greene county residents expressed support for Dreamers and a program to help them gain citizenship after President Donald Trump attacked Democrats for what he said is a failure to compromise on the issue with Republicans. The impasse sparked a brief federal shutdown last month.

In early September, President Trump's Justice Department announced the phasing out of the DACA program, which stands for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, an Obama-era ordered that allowed the so-called 'Dreamers, ' undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S.as children, to remain.

Trump emphasized Thursday that "dreamers" - the ones who are immigrants - aren't the same as DACA recipients.

"Let's come together, set politics aside and finally get the job done", Trump said. Next, turning to Congress, he called on both sides of the aisle to put an end to these "bad people" roaming the nation. "'It's not Dreamers. Don't fall into that trap.'" .

At the GOP retreat, immigration was not officially on the agenda.

But a court injunction won by California in January stalled the program's wind-down, forcing the government to accept new renewals at least until courts decide whether Trump's order to end DACA was constitutional.

Democrats say the memo, released on Friday, is a "shameful effort to discredit" the Federal Bureau of Investigation and inquiries into Russian meddling. But we need to understand that there are hundreds of thousands of American citizens living in poverty because there's nowhere to work.

The discord highlights the challenge lawmakers face in trying to reach a deal on immigration.

The president proceeded to reiterate the administration's immigration proposal, which trades the hopes of legal family immigration for a path to citizenship for DACA recipients. During the speech, however, an ad-libbing Trump skipped that line but regardless delivered a robust case for pursuing the framework. "There are six, seven or eight different (immigration) proposals, a lot of them include (money for a border wall), which would be a deal breaker for most members that have border districts".

Thune said it was not yet clear what the Senate debate would look like or what sort of legislation it might proceed from. "But the other stuff, if the stakes get raised and then other issues enter the conversation it gets more complicated, and it gets harder to pass in the House". "But right now it's pretty much even, but slightly opposed". The 2013 shutdown was caused by disagreements between the President, a Democrat, and a mostly Republican Congress.

On the Sunday morning talk shows, Democrats ripped the memo pressed by Republicans, saying it was a purely political effort.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., told reporters he is optimistic, The Hill reported. This is the first time she emerged publicly since the bombshell report that Trump had a fling with a porn star.

Separately, a bipartisan group of senators has been meeting to gauge what kind of bill can attract broad support in the Senate.

Trump's own guests included parents of two girls murdered by the Mara Salvatrucha gang, better known as MS-13, whose existence the White House blames mostly on illegal immigration from Central America.

He called out lawmakers by name to praise them and he said that Ryan called him the other day to say he's never seen the Republican Party as united as it is now.
