Teenagers are unfriending Facebook more than ever for Snapchat

Facebook is still growing in the US market- mainly due to increases in usage by older age groups

Facebook will lose an estimated two million users under 25 this year, with Snapchat and Instagram the main beneficiaries.

Facebook is predicted to lose ground with United Kingdom users aged between 12 and 17 in 2018 while over 55s are set to become one of its largest demographics, according to eMarketer.

However, where as in the past Facebook-owned Instagram has been successful in attracting many of those younger social media users, that's not expected to be the case in 2018.

For a good while now, various studies and reports have indicated that Facebook was having trouble keeping younger users on its network.

In the U.S. last year, 68.5% of social media users at age 12 to 17 years old used Facebook, down from 90 percent in 2013, according to EMarketer. Snapchat's popularity with teens and young adults rose significantly since the platform first launched in 2011.

'There are now some early signs that younger social network users are being swayed by Snapchat'. Instagram is one of them.

Is Facebook for old people? Over-55s flock in as the young leave

Over-55s will become the second-biggest group on the network, as 700,000 people aged 12 to 24 defect to services such as Snapchat, according to predictions by eMarketer.

According to the report, Instagram is expected to gain roughly 1.6 million young users up to 24 years old, but Snapchat will get the upper hand.

The under-12 age group meanwhile will experience a decline of 9.3 percent this year, eMarketer said. Instagram's user base will grow from 15.7 million to 18.4 million, Snapchat will surge from 14.8 million to 16.2 million while Twitter will grow from 12.4 million to 12.6 million.

Around 43 per cent of social media users will use Snapchat this year, which eMarketer said is more than twice its penetration rate from three years ago.

"This is the first time eMarketer has predicted a decline in the number of US Facebook users in those age groups", the company said.

According to eMarketer, the largest growth is expected to be among older social network users.
