Teacher held for abusing student

A teacher of the Carmel Primary School in Kolkata has been arrested for allegedly molesting a minor, on Friday, after angry parents surrounded the school and demanded access to the accused, several media reports said.

Cops were called in to control the angry protesters, consisting of parents.

Kolkata Police rushed to the spot to contain the situation and took the accused teacher in custody. Parents said the accused has been threatening the victim that he would kill her if she spoke to anybody.

"I am of the view that male teachers should not be appointed in all-girls' schools", he said.

"Soumen Rana, a dance teacher, at a south Kolkata primary school has been arrested under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for. abusing a Class 2 student", police said.

State Education Minister Partha Chatterjee said the government would probe into the matter.

On Friday, parents started protesting in front of the school, alleging that the school did not take any lessons from the G D Birla incident and no special security was arranged for the students.

"I have repeatedly said that the school authorities must ensure safety of the students".

The incident saw massive protests by the guardians for nearly a week leading to the arrest of both men and removal of the school's principal.

"They are saying the CCTV cameras have been removed because fix work is going on".

The incident brought back memories of a similar case in December last year, where a four-year-old girl student of G D Birla Centre for Education was allegedly sexually assaulted by two teachers inside the school. The parents alleged that the school administration even tried to downplay their allegations.
