The Sunday night championship, in which the Philadelphia Eagles toppled the New England Patriots 41-33, attracted an overnight rating of 47.4 on NBC, according to preliminary data from the network, down about 3 percent from previous year.

"We expected about 50,000 people to come by and we definitely ran out of product every single day-we had a lot of people, a lot of happy faces". Fans ripped out a number of seats after the final Vikings game at the Metrodome in 2013.

However, it must be noted that Super Bowl 2018's ratings hit a 10-year low.

But as fans were heading to U.S. Bank Stadium at noon Sunday, the temperature in Minneapolis was minus-2 degrees, with a wind chill of negative 23 - by far the coldest Super Bowl on record.

This year's Super Bowl posted a slight decline in TV viewership versus a year ago, with the game pulling in $414 million in advertising sales to NBC - the second-biggest take in history.

To be fair, the NFL's ratings have been down all year, and trending downward. Among factors cited by analysts are an overall drop in television viewing and divisive player protests over racial inequality. This year's non-program time accounted for 22% of total time of broadcast. "No game action or commercial time were missed", an NBC spokesperson said in a statement.

The halftime show featuring Justin Timberlake averaged 106 million viewers, NBC said. The past two Super Bowls, which averaged overnight ratings of 48.8 (in 2017) and 49 (in 2016), were each steady with over 111 million viewers.
