Hitting out at the Modi government, Gandhi said since it came to power four years back institutions that form the foundation of a democracy - Parliament, judiciary, media and civil society - have come under systemic assault.

Referring to Modi's speeches in Parliament yesterday, he told reporters that it was clear that the prime minister was not interested in answering "fundamental questions".

"Modi stole the contract from HAL and gave it to his friend".

"The Rafale deal during UPA was handed to the government-undertaking HAL, based in Bengaluru. What price have you fixed for buying aircrafts?", He further said. He accused it of making "false promises" and not delivering on generating jobs.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar said Shah told party MPs that broader details of the transaction, including that it would cost over Rs 58,000 crore, have been shared but break-up of expenditure can not be made public. "But this seems to be a game of maximum publicity, minimum government, or put another way, maximum marketing, minimum delivery", Gandhi said. "This country wants to know your future plans for the country", the Congress chief said as he kickstarted his party's poll campaign.

He also spoke about his and Sonia Gandhi's long-standing relationship with Ballari, saying "I will never forget that you embraced Sonia Gandhi and stood with her".

Sonia Gandhi, the Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson, on Thursday cautioned the party MPs to be prepared for an early Lok Sabha election as done by then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
