Prosecutor General Orders to Summon Samsung Officials in Iran over Gift Ban

Shortly afterwards, the International Olympic Committee backed down on the decision to deny gift Samsung smartphones to both Iranian and North Korean athletes.

Pyeongchang: Organisers of South Korea's Winter Olympics apologised to the Iranian team before Friday's opening ceremony for what they called a misunderstanding over gifts of Samsung mobile phones.

Games organisers had refused on Wednesday to give athletes from Iran and North Korea the Galaxy Note 8 devices from sponsor Samsung, loaded with essential logistical and competition information, due to worldwide sanctions.

The apology appeared to have helped defuse a spat in which Iran on Thursday summoned South Korea's ambassador over reports that its athletes would not receive a $1,100 smartphone each.

"There was a confusion as the IOC and organizers had to review legal issues on giving the Galaxy Note 8 smartphone to athletes from countries under global sanction", an official from the organizing committee said, apologizing to Samsung for being accused despite its good intentions.

Also, an informed source told the IRIB that ICT Minister Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi had also demanded the South Korean company to apologize, saying the minister was considering revocation of registration service for Samsung devices on the Iranian network.

Games organisers POCOG earlier said: "A letter was today sent from POCOG president Lee apologise for the misunderstanding regarding the distribution of mobile phones to the Iranian athletes".

The IOC has confirmed that the Iranian athletes are entitled to receive and keep the phones.

Samsung Electronics has provided some 4,000 units of the Galaxy Note 8 Olympic Edition to all athletes and International Olympic Committee officials visiting PyeongChang.

In a press release to the Tehran Times, the ambassador said, "The Embassy of the Republic of Korea confirms that the unwise decision yesterday (Feb. 7) did come from neither the Korean government nor the Korean company in question". Iran has four competitors at the Olympics.

Reclusive North Korea and the rich, democratic South are technically still at war because their 1950-53 conflict ended in a truce, not a peace treaty.
